The Richard Wollheim Centenary Project
The Interdisciplinary Psychoanalytic Thought network’s Richard Wollheim Centenary programme took place in Oxford during the academic year 2023-24. It comprised a series of in-person events, including informal lectures, discussion seminars and other presentations, around the exhibition of Patrice Moor’s work, The Presence of Absence.
- December 4th 2023, 6pm: Professor Derek Matravers (Open University) gave his paper at the St John’s (Oxford) Psychoanalysis Seminar on ‘The Role of Psychoanalysis in Richard Wollheim’s Philosophy of Art’. A pre-recorded version, in discussion with Ellie Roberts, Janet Sayers and Maarten Steenhagen, is available to view online. Those not registered to receive Wollheim Centenary Project notifications must register to receive the link at wollheimcentenary@gmail.com giving their academic status or reason for interest.
- January 20th 2024: a panel of speakers considered Wollheim’s ‘crossover’ concepts between art, literature, philosophy and psychoanalysis (workshop). See here for the full programme.
- February 16th to March 8th 2024 (not Sundays): the exhibition The Presence of Absence, open 2pm-6pm, was accompanied by evening talks in the gallery. Speakers reflected on the connections to be made between the work and Wollheim’s philosophy of psychoanalysis and art, and on the psychological and psychoanalytic resonances of the artist’s work itself. Speakers included Louise Braddock, Vanessa Brassey, Denise Cullington, Elisa Galgut, Niall Gildea, Ela Gorkay, Ellie Roberts and Janet Sayers. See here for the full programme.
